Serbia must increase the use of renewable energy sources by 2020, the state to decide how

Serbia is obliged to reach 27% of the total consumption of energy from renewable energy sources (RES) by 2020. The current percentage is 22%.
At the panel discussion “Renewable energy sources for more energy efficient future”, organized by the Association for Sustainable Development and the Youth Forum of the European Movement in Serbia, it was said that the state itself decided how to reach the goal, that is, whether to distribute the consumption to the sector of electric energy, heating and cooling or transport.
It was pointed out that Serbia's RES potential was great, but also that it wasn't exploited as much as it could be and that, according to earlier data, it could provide for half of Serbia's annual energy needs.
In Serbia, wind power accounts for merely 7% of the annual production of electricity.
It was also said that coal dominated the current production of electricity in Serbia, but that effort needed to be made in order to make bioenergy the backbone of Serbia's energy system, thereby making it stable and sustainable.
It was pointed out that renewable energy sources have been in use in Serbia only since the 1970s, and that they were introduced to the legislature only in 2000.
