A big sip for mankind – Beer production on the Moon

Various sources predict that people will start traveling to the Moon again in the next fifteen years, and the first ones to return to the Earth's satellite might be welcomed by a cold glass of Moon beer.
A team of students from the University of California are competing to become the first beer brewers on the Moon and send their experiment on the spacecraft of the Indian company TeamIndus within the Google Lunar XPRIZE competition.
Around 3,000 teams competed for the place in the team Indus spacecraft, and this team is one of the 25 to take off on December 28, 2017.
– It all started as a joke among a group of friends. We all appreciate the craft of beer, and some of us own our own home-brewing kits – said Neeki Ashari, the team leader.
When they heard that there was an opportunity to design an experiment that would go up on India’s moon lander, they decided to combine their hobby with the competition by focusing on the viability of yeast in outer space.
– Brewing beer in space is just one application of this yeast research. The experiment would also be important for the development of pharmaceuticals and yeast-containing foods, like bread – Ashari said.
All the finalists will be able to present their final prototypes in India in March.
