Tender for preparation of technical documentation for construction of tunnel between Danube and Sava slopes opens – Construction to possibly begin in 2021

The city of Belgrade is taking steps towards beginning the construction of the tunnel between Danube and Sava slopes which would help reduce the density of the traffic in the city center. The tendering procedure for preparation of technical documentation for the tunnel construction has been opened. The documentation stipulates carrying out geological studies and analyzing all obstacles that could hinder construction.

It is highly probable that the construction will start in 2021, the Head Urban Planner of Belgrade, Marko Stojcic told Vecernje Novosti daily.

The subject of the documentation is the tunnel from Karadjordjeva Street connected by road with Gavrila Principa Street, where the tunnel entrance will be, to the tunnel exit on Despot Stefan Blvd near the Ministry of Foreign Affairs building.

Previously it was said that the tunnel would have two tubes, one for each direction with two pedestrian lanes. Certain buildings in the construction zone, specifically in the zone of the tunnel entrance in Gavrila Principa Street and Kamenicka Street are slated for demolition and the removal of the buildings should be detailed in the demolition projects.

As Stojcic told Vecernje Novosti. the tendering procedure concerns geological conditions and technical difficulties that can prevent the progression of the idea itself.

– After, we will have clearer picture of the value of the works. During the following year, we will work on obtaining necessary permits and perhaps open a tender for the contractor. Maybe we will fulfill the requirements to start construction during 2020 but it will most likely happen in 2021.

Directorate for Building Land and Construction has opened the tendering for preparation of technical documentation for the tunnel construction on August 8. The deadline for submitting bids is September 9 until 11 am, while the public opening of the bids will be held on the same day at 11:30 am.
