In a front page article, CNN highlights the world's oldest airline carriers, including Serbia's national company.

Reminding that, in the year which marks the 100th anniversary of the establishment of the airline industry, very few airlines still survive in their original form, CNN presents 10 of the oldest airlines in the world still in operation, with Air Serbia in the eighth spot.

The article reminds that the company was founded in 1927 and talks about the history of what is now the largest airline in the region, with flights to 61 destinations from its two airports in Serbia.

As CNN writes, Air Serbia claims descent from the several airlines that operated as flag carriers of Yugoslavia (hence its code JU), starting with Aeroput in 1927 and Jat Airways from 1948.

– During the Cold War years, Jat developed a significant route network and bought equipment from both East and West, in line with Yugoslavia's status as a non-aligned country – the article says.

After the breakup of Yugoslavia, Jat became the Serbian flag carrier. In 2013, Etihad bought a 49% equity stake in the company, which then engaged in a massive recapitalization and rebranding operation that saw it adopt the new name of Air Serbia, CNN reminds.
