2020 RETROSPECTIVE: Investments in PUBLIC UTILITY INFRASTRUCTURE and ENERGY Most Interesting to eKapija Users

Is there electricity without coal in Serbia? Whereas, in the European Union, the year 2020 will be remembered as the first year in which renewable energy sources dominated the production of electricity, according to the recently published study of the Energy Community, Serbia has the negative distinction of being the country that incites “dirty” energy more than any other country in the region.

Judging by announcements from Europe at least, but also the leading European banks which finance energy projects, we will have to give up on the fossil fuels. Some steps, however tentative, have been made. Energy and investments in energy infrastructure are increasingly discussed through the prism of RES in Serbia.

It is therefore not surprising that the list of investments in public utility infrastructure and energy that drew the most attention from eKapija’s readers features those pertaining to wind farms, solar power plants and alternative fuel production facilities.

1. Obrenovac-New Belgrade heating pipeline

In early 2020, MPs at the National Assembly of Serbia confirmed the loan agreement for the construction of the Obrenovac-New Belgrade heating pipeline. The loan agreement was signed with the Chinese Export-Import bank.



2. Attis Industries alternative fuel factory Kula

In mid-2020, the Municipality of Kula signed the memorandum of understanding with Attis Industries, headquartered in the United States. The investor is a company which is active in the production of alternative fuels, and it is interested in building and opening a new production facility in Kula.

3. Basaid Wind Farm Kikinda, first geothermal power plant in Serbia planned

In November 2020, it was announced that the construction of the Basaid Wind Farm near Kikinda should start in 2021.

The French investor also plans to build the first geothermal power plant in Serbia in 2021.

4. Elicio Wind new wind farms in Pancevo territory

Elicio Wind, which has already raised two wind farms in Serbia, Alibunar (42 MW) and Malibunar (8 MW), intends to keep investing in increasing its share in the green energy market in Serbia, as confirmed for eKapija by Christophe Bols, the company’s country manager for Serbia.

– We have initiated new projects in the territory of the City of Pancevo. We have filed requests to the local self-government and we expect a positive outcome upon the establishment of the new city authorities – Bols told our portal.



5. Waste incinerator, production of energy and development of Vinca landfill

In May 2020, it was announced that Beo Cista Energija is to begin withdrawing money from the credit line worth EUR 290 million, provided by the International Finance Corporation (IFC), the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) and the Development Bank of Austria (OeEB) for the construction and management of a facility of 103 MW for the production of energy from municipal waste and a construction waste treatment facility, which will enable the closing of the Vinca landfill.

6. Solar power plant on the roof of ProCredit Bank

In February 2020, ProCredit Bank completed the construction of a 40 kW solar power plant on the roof of its central in Belgrade and thereby ensured not just additional energy independence, but also a much lower environmental pollution, the bank announced.

7. TPP Kolubara B

In March 2020, EPS signed an agreement with the Chinese company POWERCHINA on the construction of the Thermal Power Plant Kolubara B. As announced at the time, the plan is for the construction of the capacities of 350 MW to start in 2021 and for the new block to be connected to the network in 2024.



8. Pupin Wind Farm Kovacica

The Kovacica Wind Farm, located in the area of cadaster municipalities of Debeljaca and Crepaja, will continue spreading to the cadaster municipality of Kovacica. This was confirmed on November 3, 2020, by the president of the Municipality of Kovacica, Jaroslav Hubrik, and Milos Colic, a representative of the Kovacica Wind Farm and the director of Enlight K2 Wind d.o.o, which operates as part of the Israeli company Enlight Renewable Energy.

9. Cibuk 2 Wind Farm Kovin

In late 2020, it was announced that another wind farm should be raised in Kovin in 2024, namely Cibuk 2, which will have twice as much installed power as Cibuk 1, which opened in the autumn of 2019.
