How digitalization of construction projects increases profitability in these turbulent times

A word from an expert – Bojan Petkovic, Regional Lead for East Europe and Central Asia at Plan Radar from Austria

Global construction industry is facing one of its most challenging periods so far. Constructors and investors have been, for a while now, walking through a mine field of supply chains, unstable prices of construction materials and lack of workforce. Different events are obstructing the development of the construction industry since the construction sites started closing down due to Covid-19 pandemic, through fluctuating prices of construction materials and energy products all the way to rising costs for contractors and investors worldwide.

It`s no wonder then that in these difficult circumstances many companies in the industry want to increase profitability in any way possible, reducing unnecessary costs and upgrading current processes. Therefore, Many businesses in developed and developing countries are more prone to adopt innovative, digital solutions.

Nowadays, the latest applications for managing construction projects provide gathering and documenting all data and processes which ensures better quality and the complete revision and coordination between teams. These technologies drive contractors to assess every phase of the project to the last detail and analyze consumption of materials and time spent working and identify what resources can be saved up, even if its minimal. One of the additional important advantages of adopting digital tools is reducing frequency of errors which consequentially reduces the need for repair after the construction is finished.

Research shows that estimated value of avoidable error in the global construction industry has reached around 177 billions of dollars per year. This is not only a direct expense but it poses questions about the current efficacy of quality control on-site.

Visualization tools in digital applications for construction industry can help reduce the losses to a minimum by identifying potential scenarios during the construction phase and avoid repairs after the construction is finished. Adding additional value to the project, these innovative tools improve the quality of works. The fewer error the better the end product. For contractors, investors and clients, digitalization of processes and quality optimization contribute to long-term building and maintaining their reputation.

In addition, digital platform ensure saving up on working hours through efficient and automated solutions for traditional, manual data collection methods. They make it possible to enter valuable information quickly, with greater precision and on the spot including digital replicas of working protocols and core documents such as construction journal from the site or reports on health and safety revisions from construction sites.

Aside from that, digital tools facilitate communication between teams which becomes challenging when there-s interaction with companies and associate outside of the parent company. Plans, layouts and updates can now be remotely shared even with project participants that don`t necessarily have software licenses thus increasing visibility for all parties and reducing time spent on everyday work calls and emails.

With this type of direct control, project owners have an accurate insight into what is happening on site a t any given moment and can quickly identify potential opportunities for process optimization.

The good news is that adopting digital technologies and systems is spreading not just worldwide but in the region too. Adopting digital technologies on the leading projects in the region can initiate the whole industry. Plan Radar platform has already taken off on some the biggest construction projects in the region such as the reconstruction of Sava Center or the construction of Peljesac Bridge.

Reducing error during the course of the project means that resources are used correctly and at the correct time. By Improving the the entire project process through digital technologies, contractors and investors maintain profitability in this difficult period while ensuring the highest quality of construction.
