Construction of Three BG Subway Stations Announced for This Year – Tunnel Boring Machines to Start Working at Bele Vode and Pancevo Bridge in 2025

EXPO 2027 is a national project thanks to which Serbia will become a business center of the world that year, the minister of construction, transport and infrastructure of Serbia, Goran Vesic, said for RTS. He said that, due to that event, the expansion of the BG Voz rail system was planned, which would connect Zemun Polje with the airport, the future National Stadium and EXPO. Talking about the subway system, Vesic said that the depot in Makisko Polje was being built and that three subway stations would be built in 2024 and that the boring of the tunnels for Line 1 would begin in 2025.

– We are building the subway system, but a subway is a full system only with a city rail system. An increase in the capacities toward Mladenovac through Sopot and “toward Lazarevac through Baric” is planned and this is the third route by which the expansion of the BG Voz system is planned – said Vesic.

He said that the railroad connecting Zemun Polje with the future National Stadium, airport, EXPO and Surcin center was to be built as well and that the line would subsequently be extended to Obrenovac.

– So, Obrenovac will also have a rail connection through Obrenovac by the city railway with Belgrade center. The length of this railroad from Zemun Polje to Surcin which we are building now is 18.3 kilometers, it will be designed for 120 kilometers per hour. In the coming period, we will order nine new trains which will operate this line – Vesic said.

He emphasized that, in the coming period, other BG Voz lines would be built as well and that a fully finished network could be expected by 2032. Vesic added that “with the completion of the construction of the subway system, rail traffic will become the dominant part of the public transport system.”

“Aboveground works and boring of the tunnels for Subway Line 1 to begin next year”

When it comes to the construction of the subway system, Vesic said that the construction of the depot in Makisko Polje had begun and that the first works on the construction of three subway stations would begin in 2024.

He added that, in 2025, aboveground works and shallow excavations on a section of Line 1 would begin and that one tunnel boring machine would start working near Bele Vode and the other near the Pancevo Bridge.

– They will head toward each other, eventually connecting, and that’s how the first subway line is to be done. As soon as 2025, the excavation of the tunnels with TBMs is to begin, as are the preparatory works for Line 2. In 2026, there will be excavation works with machines, so, it will progress a lot and we are beginning to build all the stations on Line 1 and the preparatory works for the stations on Line 2 are beginning – Vesic said.

“Belgrade lacks at least four hotels with five stars”

Talking about the construction of the halls for EXPO in Surcin, which has begun, Vesic pointed out that EXPO was a national project that was important for Belgrade and Serbia and thanks to which Serbia would become a business center of the world in 2027.

– Many countries will have their exhibits. In addition to that, we expect over 3.5 million tourists related to EXPO, which is truly an enormous number of tourists. Many of them will stay here. These are business tourists, not tourists who sleep in hostels, but tourists who spend money, dine in restaurants and come to sleep in hotels – pointed out Vesic.

He estimated that Belgrade lacked at least four hotels with five stars at that moment and that it would be apparent when Sava Centar opens in its full capacity, as it would be able to hold congresses with up to 7,000 people.

– Hotels in Novi Sad, Vrsac, Pancevo and other cities around Belgrade will be full as well – Vesic said.
