The minister of agriculture, forestry and water management of Serbia, Jelena Tanaskovic, and the head of the Delegation of the European Union in Serbia, Emanuele Giaufret, have signed the Contract for the Construction of a System for the Collection and Treatment of Waste Waters in Sokobanja.

After signing the document, Tanaskovic said that the contracted amount of the works was EUR 12.4 million, of which the EU provided EUR 6.3 million, and Serbia EUR 6.1 million from the budget.

According to her, the project includes the reconstruction and construction of the sewage network and the construction of a new waste water treatment plant.

The minister said that the realization of the project would contribute to the improvement of the quality of the living environment in the region, but also the lowering of the pollution of the rivers Gradasnica and Moravica, as well as the Bovan Lake, located downstream and used as a water source for the municipality of Aleksinac.

– In this way, waste water treatment for the wider area of Sokobanja municipality will be ensured, and therefore full compliance with the relevant national legislation, as well as EU directives in this area – the minister pointed out.

She explained that, in planning the project, the importance of Sokobanja as a tourism center had been taken into consideration and that, therefore, the planned capacity of the treatment of waste waters was equivalent to the number of residents, encompassing the peak of the tourist season.

The project “Construction of a System for the Collection and Treatment of Waste Waters in the Municipality of Sokobanja” is financed from the IPA 2020 program based on the Financial Agreement signed between the Government of Serbia and the European Commission.
