In the second quarter of this year, a preliminary technical study on the possibility of peacetime application of nuclear energy in the country will be completed, the aim of which is to present the available technologies and recommend suitable solutions for Serbia, and after that we can start planning the next steps, based on the guidelines of the International Atomic Energy Agency, said the minister of mining and energy of Serbia, Dubravka Djedovic Handanovic. She announced this at the meeting with the ambassador of Slovenia to Serbia, Damjan Bergant, with whom she talked about the possibilities of cooperation of the two countries in the field of nuclear energy.

– Given that Slovenia has had the Krsko nuclear power plant for decades, which produces more than a third of the country’s electricity, we discussed cooperation between regulatory, scientific and educational institutions, exchange of experiences and visits by our experts, given that Slovenia has successfully managed the nuclear program for decades and is considering building new capacities – said Djedovic Handanovic, as reported on the ministry’s website.

The minister said that Serbia recognized nuclear energy as a potential long-term solution for the decarbonization of the energy sector, recalling that the moratorium on the construction of nuclear power plants had been lifted at the end of the previous year.

– The use of nuclear energy is envisaged as one of the options within the Integrated National Energy and Climate Plan, as well as in the new Energy Development Strategy, where we considered the possibility of introducing nuclear power plants into the Serbian power system after 2040 – stated Djedovic Handanovic.

Bergant emphasized Slovenia’s determination to establish and develop long-term institutional cooperation with Serbia in the field of nuclear energy.

– The Jozef Stefan Institute is interested in cooperating with the Vinca Institute of Nuclear Sciences as well as other institutions that can provide support to Serbia in the development of the nuclear program – he said.
