RATEL “in constant communication” with Starlink in Serbia – What else is needed for the operations to start?

Elon Musk's satellite internet, Starlink, which promises a fast and stable connection even in the most remote areas, is apparently one step away from arriving in this region, and as eKapija has learned from the domestic Regulatory Agency for Electronic Communications and Postal Services (RATEL), negotiations with this company have been ongoing since 2021. On the availability map published by Starlink, it is stated that the service in Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Montenegro will be available from 2025, however, there is no official confirmation from RATEL. They point out that Starlink will start operating in Serbia when it meets all the legal requirements.

RATEL tells our portal that since mid-2021 they have been in constant communication with the Starlink d.o.o. branch in Belgrade.

– Currently, they are in the process of fulfilling all the conditions stipulated by law in order to be able to start providing satellite internet in the Republic of Serbia – RATEL states.

In order for Starlink to become the official operator of electronic communications in Serbia, they point out that it is necessary to submit complete documentation in accordance with the Rulebook on General Conditions for the Performance of Electronic Communications Activities under the Regime of General Authorization.

When all the conditions are met, Starlink will be able to enter its name in the electronic communications operator register maintained by RATEL.

What remains unknown for now is the price range of services that Starlink will offer to users in Serbia, as well as whether it will cooperate with any of the existing telecommunications operators. All such information depends on the business decision of Starlink and will be available after the completion of the registration procedure.
