In accordance with all of the above, the question is what is the position of Serbia at the moment in all of this - have tourism officials and state authorities, tourism organizations and higher education institutions, who train personnel in this field, already recognized all this and started to adjust Serbia`s tourist offer accordingly?
The answer seems to be positive so far. Serbia, as well as other countries that year after year brag about their tourist indicators and statistics, closely follows these trends and adapts the offer to the requirements of the modern tourist, according to insiders. This is evidenced by the recent establishment of Groups for camping, glamping and "outdoor" tourism within the Tourism Association of the Serbian Chamber of Commerce (PKS). At the founding assembly of the group, it was assessed that this is "a way to promote Serbia as an extremely attractive camping and glamping destination where outdoor active vacation tourism is what we can offer and in which we have a serious competitive advantage over the whole of Europe."
Ivana Šagovnović, research associate at the Department of Tourism, Faculty of Science and Mathematics in Novi Sad confirms that domestic tourism successfully follows modern trends. As she points out for eKapija, the most adaptable destinations in Serbia, which recognize the preferences of modern tourists, have a greater chance of being on their tourist itinerary.
- One of the fastest growing trends in Serbia is glamping – a stay in nature with complete comfort. This type of tourism is becoming more and more popular, especially in destinations such as Fruška Gora, Sremski Karlovac, Zlatibor, Kopaonik, Kosmaj and the Drina coast. The combination of nature and modern accommodation, such as luxury cabins and log cabins, provides tourists with an unforgettable experience. Another significant trend in tourism is eco-tourism, which involves the travel of small groups of tourists to preserved natural areas, with minimal impact on the environment. Among the most common tourist activities are kayaking, hiking, cycling, bird watching and guided tours through protected areas. In addition, eco-tourism involves direct interaction with the local population, through the purchase of local products and souvenirs, participation in traditional crafts workshops and organic food tasting. All these activities make tourists active participants at the destination and contribute to their memorable tourist experience - emphasized Šagovnović and added that some glamping destinations in Serbia have already attracted the attention of tourists, standing out with their unique concept and attractive locations.
- Among them is the "Lala Vineyard" in Sremska Kamenica, located on the slopes of Fruška Gora, then the "Buzzofski" house in Zasavica, where close contact with animals contributes to a special experience - waking up in a peaceful environment, far from the city bustle. In western Serbia, along the banks of the Drina River, there is "Drina River Glamping", a place for a true vacation in nature. The special nature reserves of Obedska bara and Zasavica have already been recognized as destinations for eco-tourism. In their offer, they highlight the presentation of biodiversity, well-maintained hiking trails, catamaran and boat rides, and bird watching, which allows exploring the destination both on land and from water. "Forest wellness", an exclusive program that is only available in Obedska bara, stands out in particular. This unique offer combines easy walks, mental relaxation, awareness exercises and strengthening of the body and mind, giving tourists the opportunity to relieve stress and regain energy - highlights Šagovnović.

The Association for Tourism of the SCC points out that Serbian tourism is gradually adapting to global trends that favor alternative forms of vacation.
- Tourists today often seek authentic experiences that include activities in nature and participation in local life. Rural tourism is becoming more and more popular, because visitors stay in the countryside, participate in traditional crafts, fruit picking and other local activities. Also, glamping is gaining importance, because it combines closeness to nature and the comfort of luxury accommodation. These types of vacations enable tourists to connect with local communities and explore unique aspects of Serbian tradition and nature. Some of the good examples are tourist offers where tourists can enjoy a stay on farms and participate in work activities, and there are also tourist offers that combine environmentally friendly practices with the comforts of modern tourism - according to the Association for Tourism of the SCC for eKapija.
From the Tourism Sector of the Ministry of Tourism and Youth, they emphasize that the development of rural and village tourism shows significant growth from year to year.
- More and more tourists spend their free time and part of their annual vacation in rural areas, they are happy to choose private accommodation facilities, where interactive contents are offered in nature, outdoors, they get acquainted with the lifestyle of the local population, taste traditional gastronomic specialties, gain special experiences, which are recounted and remembered. This is one of the important reasons for the growth of foreign demand for rural and village tourism in the world and in Serbia. According to data from eTurista, 1,303 rural tourist households have been registered in Serbia, which have 6,486 beds, 8,478 individual beds and 270 camping pitches. The number of interested individuals and agricultural farms is increasing, who decide to develop rural and village tourism and in this connection attend trainings in order to adjust not only the accommodation standards, but also the complementary tourist offer according to the demands of their guests as efficiently and effectively as possible - the ministry explains.

In addition to the above, as they remind, the invitation of the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) for the selection of the "Best Tourist Village according to UNWTO" has been published for many years. The goal is to recognize a village that is an outstanding example of a rural tourist destination with recognized cultural and natural resources, that preserves and promotes values, products and lifestyle in the village and community, as well as that it is committed to sustainability in all its aspects - economic, social and ecological, with the main goal that tourism becomes one of the drivers of positive development and the well-being of the rural community.
- In this category, the village of Mokra Gora was declared the best village in Serbia in 2021. The upgrade program "The Best Tourist Villages according to UNWTO" is actually the UNWTO`s support to a number of selected villages that do not fully meet the criteria for recognition - "The Best Village", in order to overcome the shortcomings identified in the evaluation process. In addition to individual mentoring, the villages in the Upgrade Program will join the Best Tourism Villages Network (BTV), which covers five world regions. This category included the village of Gostilje, which has been in the upgrading program since 2021. There is also the "Best Tourism Villages according to UNWTO" Network (Best Tourism Villages - BTV) - a platform for learning, exchanging knowledge, experiences and good practices among members. Members of the Network become those villages that have been declared the best tourist villages by UNWTO, as well as those that will receive support within the Upgrade Program. Experts and partners from the public and private sectors who are engaged in the promotion of tourism as a driving force for rural development contribute to this network. This year, the call was again announced in the form of the UNWTO "Best Tourist Villages" competition in 2025. Villages from all over Serbia have the right to participate in this prestigious competition at the world level - the ministry says.
Although precise data on the percentage of tourists who prefer alternative forms of vacation in Serbia are not readily available, global trends, as stated in the Association for Tourism of the SCC, point to a significant increase in interest in these forms of tourism. In Serbia, this form of tourism attracts an increasing number of visitors, especially from Western European countries and Turkey, where these forms of vacation are already very developed. The culture of indigenous experiences, eco-tourism and luxury camping are recognized as attractive offers for modern tourists who want to escape from mass tourism and experience something unique.
- Although the exact percentage is not known, the fact that more and more camps and rural households are adapting to these needs suggests that the market for these tourist services is on the rise - the Association for Tourism points out.
Retro tourism and nostalgic tours - The first association "Šarganska osmica", but not the only one
More and more adventurers in the world are ready to pay dozens and hundreds of euros and dollars more, in order to go back in time at a certain destination and take a peek into cultures that seem to have stood still in time. Serbia may not have the Orient Express or exotic tribal communities, but experts and authorities indicate that we are not lagging behind in this aspect of the tourist offer either, although of course there is plenty of room for improving the offer.
- The most famous example in Serbia is the "Šarganska osmica" railway, on which the museum train "Nostalgija" travels, recording significant visits. This railway is an ideal addition to organized trips and excursions. Historical trains, such as Tito`s "Blue Train" and "Romantika", which today represent mobile museums on the rails and win the hearts of domestic and foreign tourists, railway fans and true nostalgics, have a special appeal - Šagovnović points out.
She recalls that Belgrade once offered a unique experience of a panoramic tram ride, known as the "Tramway called Belgrade".
- This one-hour tour, accompanied by a tourist guide, was an ideal way to refresh the day, complete free time and discover the history and architecture of our capital. The revival of such initiatives, along with the revitalization of old railway routes, could enrich Serbia`s tourist offer, bringing a retro experience and a hint of nostalgia - Šagovnović believes.

In the Association for Tourism of the SCC, they estimate that apart from the charm of Šarganska Osmica, as well as rare tours such as the "Romantika" train to Sremski Karlovac, Serbia could develop more similar offers, such as rides on old boats on rivers or bicycle tours through historical places.
And the story does not end there when we talk about Serbia`s offer, which adapts to the various affinities of modern tourists. The Ministry`s Department of Tourism reminds that tourists who plan their trips in accordance with the calendar of events and festivals that interest them should not be forgotten. According to this sector of the ministry, the events have become the first tourist product that has attracted a large number of tourists from the countries of the region, Europe and the world in recent years. During their stay at the events, tourists plan to extend their stay in Serbia in order to visit some of the other attractions, according to their own preferences and age.
- They often decide to continue traveling to one of the countries in the region. Since the tourists who come to Exit, Guča, Beer Fest, Wine Vision Fair, as well as BITEF, FEST and other manifestations, are not the same according to demand segments, reasons for coming, as well as the experiences they expect, we cannot generalize about the additional offer for all of them. Of course, getting to know the cultural offer, the way of life outside urban areas and being in nature (hiking, mountaineering, cycling and other activities within the tourism product - special interests) are additional activities that are decided upon. Stakeholders in tourism in the public, private and civil sectors at the local level should recognize the requirements of tourism demand and accordingly create a tourist offer, in order to attract tourists who come to events. In this way they will meet the tourist demand, keep them longer and they will earn more. These are, in the end, the laws of the tourist market - according to the Department of Tourism.
In addition to all of the above, it is interesting that in one more aspect of the offer, Serbia looks up to the world, and that is a tour of the locations where famous series and movies were shot. True, since we are not Hollywood, this is primarily about the affinities of contemporary domestic tourists.
- We treat this topic as a very interesting niche of creative and cultural tourism, which requires a professional approach from stakeholders at the local level, namely the public, private and civil sectors. The Serbian Film Association has already considered the possibility of meeting this segment of tourist demand, which is interested in tours of locations where films, series, documentary shows, preserved scenery were filmed. Nothing that has global popularity and would attract foreign tourists was filmed in Serbia, but domestic tourists want to see the houses where the series "Happy People", "A Better Life" and "Family Treasure" were filmed, as well as the places where the movie "Marathon Runners Run the Lap of Honor" was filmed. On the other hand, Rajački Pimnice became even more popular because of the action of the series "Secret of the Vine, and the same was the case with Baranda in Vojvodina, because of the series "The People will Return" - they emphasize in the Department for Tourism of the relevant ministry.
Uh, that digitization and virtual tours... - Serbia`s tourist offer can`t do without them either
As in everyday routines, tourism and the creation of tourist offers have not bypassed digitization and technological innovations, especially when it comes to visiting museums, other cultural institutions, and historical sites. Because, of course, the modern tourist does not accept these tours with enthusiasm if they do not include a virtual experience and holograms.
- Serbia follows contemporary trends in the application of new technologies in tourism, and their most obvious application can be seen in the work of cultural institutions. The 360-degree virtual tours allow visitors to explore numerous museums and galleries across Serbia, including the National Museum and the History Museum of Serbia in Belgrade, the Matica Srpska Gallery, the Museum of Vojvodina and the Pavle Beljanski Memorial Collection in Novi Sad. Additionally, thanks to this technology, you can take a virtual tour of the National Museum in Pančevo, the Museum of Danube Swabians in Sremski Karlovci, the Milan Konjović Gallery in Sombor and the National Museum in Niš. In this way, historical sites such as the Red Cross Camp, Ćele Kula and the archeological site of Medijana are also accessible, providing an insight into Serbia`s rich past from any part of the world - says Šagovnović.
A special step forward in the application of new technologies, she adds, was made by the Gallery of Matica Srpska, becoming the first institution in the region to use HoloLens, an innovation that until now has only been applied in medicine.
- In 2022, the National Museum in Belgrade presented the most technologically advanced project - MetaHuman prehistoric man, an interactive 3D reconstruction of the face of the inhabitants of Lepenski vir, which follows and imitates the movements of visitors - Ivana Šagovnović points out.
As she points out, holograms are becoming more and more part of the museum experience, so, in 2023, the National Museum in Kruševac presented a hologram of Prince Lazar as part of the "Museum of the Future" initiative, while the mobile application "Holograd", based on augmented reality, enriches visits to Felix Romuliana and the National Museum in Zaječar.

- The Nikola Tesla Museum in Belgrade, one of the most visited in Serbia, uses interactive simulations and digital displays of Tesla`s experiments, enabling visitors to explore his work and scientific legacy in an innovative way. With all these innovations, in the future, museums will increasingly turn classical sightseeing into an interactive experience and enable visitors to experience art, science and culture through virtual and augmented reality - Šagovnović points out.
The Association for Tourism of the SCC also believes that technological innovations are becoming a key element in modern tourism in general.
- Digitalization offers opportunities for better services and personalized experiences. Further plans include improving digital infrastructure and integrating innovative technology solutions to enhance the experience of modern tourists. The Association for Tourism of the Serbian Chamber of Commerce, in cooperation with CDT HUB and startup companies, is actively working on digitizing the tourism sector through innovative technological solutions. The aim is to improve the tourist offer through digital platforms, smart services and interactive content that follow the modern demands of tourists - they say from this association.
Also, the Department of Tourism of the Ministry emphasizes that, in order to improve the quality and availability of tourist services in Serbia, digitization is recognized as one of the key activities in this field.
- In this sense, the need for the establishment of an information system for the digitalization of Serbia`s tourist offer was recognized - Tourist assistant. The project was initiated by the Ministry of Trade, Tourism and Telecommunications in 2021 and was completed in 2023. This platform enables competent institutions to enter and edit information about destinations in Serbia, as well as to enter and edit information about multimedia content related to specific tourist destinations, where their "identity card" is practically created (information about accommodation, attractions, other services and offers at the destination). Also, this platform enables the end user to have an easy and simple insight into the tourist locations of Serbia, using an internet browser or mobile devices. The application tracks the tourist`s geolocation and is integrated with a digital map in order to inform the tourist of the proximity of tourist sights or attractions - the ministry says.
A special module of the platform is the Digital Guide, which enables the user to access information, among other things, about the exhibits on display, the spatial organization of a specific locality, the possibility of using audio guides as well as virtual tours, etc.
- So far, 60 virtual tours of destinations in Serbia have been completed. In addition to the above, a National portal for booking accommodation has been created. The platform is modeled on the "Booking" platform and is designed so that only owners of accommodation facilities that are registered in the eTurist system (Serbian Tourism Information System) can offer accommodation. The Digitization of Serbia`s tourist offer project envisages coverage of extremely important tourist locations with a wireless network, i.e. bringing high-speed internet to certain locations in Serbian destinations and building Wi-Fi networks for them - the ministry announced.
But what can still be improved?
In the coming period, the focus of the improvement of tourism and hospitality infrastructure, the Association for Tourism of the SCC points out, will be on the development of quality and diverse accommodation, modernization of accompanying facilities, improvement of signage and availability of information for tourists. A special emphasis will be, they say, on digitalization of services, improvement of tourist signage, the development of river traffic, panoramic sightseeing, bicycle paths and specialized offers,
which correspond to contemporary trends and expectations of international visitors, with a sustainable approach to destination development.
- Serbia already has a rich tourist offer and diverse resources, but in order to become more competitive, further improvement of tourist infrastructure, diversification of tourist content and strengthening of digital tools for tourists are necessary. Also, the promotion of authentic local experiences, connecting cultural heritage with modern technologies and better traffic connections would contribute to an even greater attractiveness of the destination on the international tourist map - Ivana Šagovnović points out.
