Serbia introducing rules for drones modeled after those in EU

The minister of construction, transport and infrastructure of Serbia, Aleksandra Sofronijevic, talked to the directors of the leading aviation companies in Serbia about the key steps toward improving air traffic, with a special focus on preparing the legal framework for the regulation of unmanned aerial vehicles (drones), the ministry announced.

The meeting especially focused on the amendment to the Law on Air Traffic which establishes the legal basis for the registration and use of a UAV system. The new regulations enable the Government of Serbia, to adopt, at the proposition of the Ministry of Transport, regulations which would define the geographic zones in which drones can be used, in line with the EU practice.

As pointed out, Serbia is recording a constant growth in the sector of air traffic - from the expansion of the network of destinations of the national airline carrier Air Serbia, to the growth of the number of passengers at the airports in Belgrade and Nis, as well as the increase of the number of flyovers in the aerial space of Serbia and Montenegro. The minister said that these results confirmed the leading position of Serbia in the region.

The minister underlined the importance of a social dialogue within companies and emphasized that it was a pre-condition for an efficient solving of problems and building mutual trust.

The meeting was attended by the top representatives of the Civil Aviation Directorate, Air Serbia, SMATSA, Airports of Serbia and the Belgrade Airport, and it was agreed for such meetings to continue to the end of the optimal coordination and a further development of the sector.
