The EU Delegation to Serbia has announced that the tender for the construction of a sewerage system on the left bank of the Danube in Belgrade has been closed.

The announcement states that one bid was received for the tender, and that it was declared unacceptable. This was practically the sixth attempt for the settlements of Kotez, Krnjaca and Borca in the Belgrade municipality of Palilula to receive a sewerage system, the construction of which was announced more than five years ago.

Namely, the tender that has now been closed was announced last February, after the previous one, announced back in 2022, was extended four times, for reasons that were not stated.

In May last year, after the tender for the construction of the wastewater treatment plant in Krnjaca was announced for the third time (which is still pending), the Mayor of Belgrade Aleksandar Sapic stated that he expected to find a contractor for both projects (for both the sewage system and the treatment plant) during the summer. Sapic said at the time that the state’s position was to try again with the European Investment Bank (EIB), with which the contract for financing this project was signed, reported Beoinfo.

– I have already said that five years of waiting since the project with the European Investment Bank was launched is too much, and that if we cannot make it work, we will terminate the contract and find another way of financing. The state’s position was to try again with the European Union, and I accepted that, with the position that this time there is no repeat exam. I insisted that them and us both change all the previous members of all the commissions, which we did. Both procurements have now been announced and we expect to get contractors for both the sewerage and the wastewater treatment plant during the summer. If there are any complications this time, I can say openly that the City of Belgrade is not to blame – said Sapic.

He added that, “if the state’s position after that is that the project should be continued with the EIB, Belgrade will not participate in that project if I am running the city.”
