New Rail Bridge in Belgrade looking at detailed testing as well – Serbian Railways Infrastructure opens tender for analysis of state and proposal of repair, cables to be checked too

The Serbian Railways Infrastructure company has opened the tender for an analysis of the state and a proposal of the repair of the New Rail Bridge on the Sava in Belgrade, the main rail route across this river in the capital city. This public procurement is split into five lots.

As can be seen from the documentation, within the first lot, the project task entails an all-encompassing check of the bridge on the Sava on the railroad 101 (Belgrade Center-Stara Pazova-Sid-state border-Tovarnik), with testing under a trial load and an assessment of suitability for use. This entails control static calculation, the preparation of repair projects, testing under a trial load and the implementation of a monitoring system.

The subject of this part of the project task is the steel structure, without the access structures. The project task will be split into six parts – the check of the entire structure, the preparation of a control static calculation, the preparation of repair projects based on the check and the control static calculation, the testing of the bridge, monitoring and use restrictions.

When it comes to the dynamics, as specified, the studying of the project documentation of the bridge will be done in June and July 2025, and the geodetic survey with the preparation of a report on the survey will be done from June every 30 days until May 2026. The internal control of the entire documentation about the check of the bridge structure will be done in the period from December 2025 to May 2026, and the preparation of the final report about the full engagement within said job, with collected results of all the testing and checks and the assessment of the suitability of the bridge for use, will be done in June 2026.

As for the cables, their visual check will be done in the period from September to October 2025, and the testing of the state of the cables length-wise, that is, all the wires within the cables, using methods without destruction, in the period from September to November 2025. The check of the entire steel structure of the bridge with a check of the anchorages of the stay cables, without determining the state of the cables length-wise, including a visual check of the visible parts of the columns of the bridge, will be done from August 2025 to May 2026.

This bridge, it is reminded, is a steel structure on seven columns, and it opened for use in 1980. The tender also requires and all-encompassing check of the three smaller bridge structures from Belgrade to Zemun with testing under a trial load and an assessment of suitability for use, as well as the preparation of the Study on the current state of the “Bezanijska kosa” tunnel.

The New Rail Bridge became the main rail bridge in Belgrade in July 2018, when passenger traffic from the former Main Rail Station in the Sava Amphitheater was fully stopped and when, at the same time, the Old Rail Bridge on the Sava, across which, during the final years of its use, trains ran at only 9 kilometers per hour, was closed for traffic as well.
