Sustainability goals in cementindustry

As far as 2012, Lukavac Cement obtainedall the necessary permits to start the process of substitution offossil fuels, thus pioneering the use of alternative fuels in thecountry and wider. That was a period of intense research, investmentsin new technologies, tests and industrial application of the latestEuropean trends in cement industry. So far, over EUR 26 million intotal was invested in the modernization of the production processthat uses alternate fuels, that is, refuse derived fuel and solidrecovered fuel.

The sustainability goals in theproduction of cement are feasible through activities in varioussegments, namely in the direction of substitution of fossil fuelswith alternate fuels, realization of projects that will improveenergy efficiency, usage of alternate materials and raw materialswhich conserve the natural resources necessary for production, anddevelopment of new, green types of cement and concrete. With that inmind, the company founded the Technology center for developmentwhich employs experts from various fields who, in collaboration withother technology scientific research institutions, work ondevelopment projects of increasing the use of alternative fuels anddesign new green products aimed at reducing the carbon footprint.

The current projects of Lukovac cement plant are grouped as energy efficiency projects, environmental protection projects and development of new products. Special importance is given to investments in renewable energy sources and utilization of waste heat generated in the production of clinkers that demonstrates great potential for electricity production. All these projects ultimately lead to transition of Lukavac Cement to green economy and contribute to better treatment and management of waste, environmental protection and conservation of resources with less CO2 emissions as the end goal.

Environmental protection and use of alternative fuels

Protecting the environment and abiding by strict standards are matters of great importance for Lukavac Cement.

Environmentally conscious activities are directed at continual investments into modern technologies resulting in the fact that today the percentage of alternate fuels in clinker production is around 55% . All of this largely contributes to lower consumption of fossil fuels with conservation of natural resources and reduction of production costs as the end goal.

It is important to mention that the consumption of alternate fuels in the EU ranges from 6% to 65% and the current EU average is around 50% which means that Lukavac Cement is positioned at the very top in Europe, this being the reason it stands out in the region.
